The great sands. And the climb back up.

Seven miles west of Grand Marais there is a place where the sand drops a hundred and seventy-five feet straight into Lake Superior. Everybody stands at the top a while before they commit. Going down takes about two minutes. Coming back up is the part people remember, and almost nobody does it twice.

Loggers used to send timber down that same slope in a wooden chute, and the friction got fierce enough that the chute would sometimes catch fire on the way to the water. That is the country Grand Sable is named for, and the stone has the temperament to match — more color variation than anything else we cut. Warm rusts and iron reds moving through cool grays and dusty taupes.

It is not a neutral stone. Treat it as a feature or leave it out. The Field Ledge cut lets the color range breathe across a large facade; the Ashlar cut orders it into courses so the variation reads as intention rather than noise. Put it on the right house and people will stop and ask what it is.
