Same roads. Same barns. Same fieldstone the farmers pulled out and stacked at the edge of the plowing. But somewhere along the way a mason took one of those cobbles and split it open to see what was inside.
Michigan Split Granite is that stone. Identical glacial granite out of Ionia, cleaved rather than left round. Where cobble keeps the face the glacier gave it, split granite shows what was always underneath — crystal, flecked with quartz and feldspar, catching light in a way the weathered outside never does.
It is the hardest stone we cut, harder than any of the limestones, and it will outlast whatever is built around it. The traditional pick when a mason wanted the stone to show its grain instead of its history.
