Drive out M-37 from Traverse City and the peninsula keeps narrowing until there is water on both sides of you. Cherry orchards in rows running down to the shore. A tasting room every few miles, and the sort of afternoon where you plan on stopping at one and somehow end up at three. At the very end a white lighthouse stands on the 45th parallel, halfway between the equator and the north pole, with a line painted on the ground so you can put a foot on either side.
Old Mission is named for that drive. Warm creams and soft golds, and a tan that deepens through the afternoon the way the orchards do. It holds its warmth even on a gray Michigan day, which from November on is most of them.
On an elevation it does the same thing. It makes the place read as welcoming before anyone has got to the door. It is the blend to reach for when the architecture is traditional and the client keeps saying the word inviting without being able to tell you what they mean by it.
